Nova Scotia Spotlight: Matthew Collins

Thursday, 23 September 2021 to Sunday, 19 June 2022

Matthew Collins was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia where he has lived for most of his life. Collins has shown his artwork in solo and group exhibitions along Nova Scotia’s South Shore, and in Halifax and Montreal. His work is also represented by public, corporate, and private collections in Canada, The Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. Matthew Collins received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1998, with a focus on painting and art history.

As an artist, Matthew Collins divides his time between landscape painting and conceptual explorations in painting. His landscapes are painted freely, with special attention to colour and paint application. Collins’ lush brushwork in Carters Beach with Marker Paint, reveals his interest in breaking the flow of the image and his use of varying materials to allow for further creative expression. Collins’ main focus is the act of painting itself, while drawing from art history, politics, advertising, and his everyday rural surroundings.

The Nova Scotia Spotlight series highlights recent acquisitions to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s Permanent Collection by artists contributing to the province’s cultural heritage. With support from Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. and the Donald R. Sobey Family Foundation in Memory of Robert W. M. Manuge.
