During the early twentieth century, perhaps because most artists were perpetually short of money, many created their own greeting cards for friends and colleagues, or for sale. The design of posters, bookplates, and menus, could also be used to supplement income. Though few of these efforts constitute “fine art”, these artistic light-weights provide an interesting glimpse into time-gone-by.
Edith and Lewis Smith’s Our Christmas Letter Home provides a delightful, tongue-in-cheek survey of life in Boston for young starving artists in 1892. A facsimile of the sketchbook will be available in The Gallery Shop during the exhibition.
